I assume he has difficulty reading what is on screen. In which case the last thing you want to do is increase the resolution. A better option is to increase the size and keep the resolution the same.

By increasing the size everything will appear larger and easier to read. Without having to use scaling. Which is an absolute mess in Windows.

As long as your computer supports HDMI. You can use a 1080p HDTV. That way you could get a cheap 40" screen and use that as a monitor. If your computer uses DVI or Displayport you can get a cheap adapter. Do not use VGA if the TV has it. Usually that only supports a lower resolution. For some reason most HDTV don't support 1920×1080 over VGA.

– Displayport and HDMI also support audio so the HDTV can act as speakers using one of these standards.
– If you get black bars around Windows or it doesn't quite fit you need to adjust the overscan settings in Windows and/or on the TV.
– Turn off any image enchancements on the HDTV especially any sort of 120hz/240hz truemotion stuff. It looks strange on Windows. Actually you should always turn that crap off. It ruins movies and makes them look like they were filmed by an amateur with a cheap camcorder.

HD has a resolution of 1280×720, so 720p.
FHD is Full HD, it is a resolution of 1920×1080, so 1080p.
QHD is quad HD which is 2560×1440, so 1440p.
