POST is an acronym for Power-On Self-Test.  As the BIOS performs each test, it displays a code that identifies the step in the test sequence.  If a catastrophic error occurs, the computer freezes with that code on the screen, and the proximate cause can be found in the documentation.  Less severe errors, like a stuck keyboard key, result in an error message or code.
