Linux is a *nix like operating system that runs on common PC hardware and other hardware it is compiled for. Google's Android and Chrome OS are based on Linux. Steam OS (for gaming) is Linux and Steam and many Steam games can run in other versions of Linux. Raspberry Pi is an inexpensive computer on a credit card size board that runs Linux. Many routers and network gateways and other hardware run Linux or FreeBSD.

Although, many Linux distributions have an easy to use windowed desktop, if you dig into the underlying text terminal and learn commands in that, you will be able to find your way around other Unix or *nix like systems. For example I have been using Linux since before Win95 or Internet Explorer existed because my first ISP ran SunOS (Unix) and gave us a shell account and apache web space. So learning Linux helped me find my way around SunOS, and also FreeBSD and NetBSD on other systems.

I am posting this using Firefox in Linux.
