HTML 5 is a change to the HTML specification (previously… HTML 4). It adds new elements (tags), removes old ones and clarifies some technical overheads to simplify matters for developers and browser vendors. The new elements allow you to present pieces of the document as having a more specific allocation than just placement in the page. Aside, Header, Article, Section, Nav etc. HTML is Hypertext Markup Language, a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages.

Let's be simple and honest. HTML is a basic markup language used for Website Designing & Development. "HTML" is a standard for a markup language used to create the structure and appearance of a web page. This standard has gone through a number of revisions over the years and the current version is version number 5, thus HTML 5. When someone says HTML they are referring to the language in general terms, when they say HTML 5 they are referring to the specific version of the specification.
