I have an anonymous account on instagram I use. I was talking to someone I know to live within an hour away from me however I don t know exactly who he/she/they are. They have claimed to know my IP address and have said they know who I am. We attend the same school I believe. Nothing in the contents of what I post
I have an anonymous account on instagram I use. I was talking to someone I know to live within an hour away from me however I don t know exactly who he/she/they are. They have claimed to know my IP address and have said they know who I am. We attend the same school I believe. Nothing in the contents of what I post could give away anything. Is this possible or just a lucky guess? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
Long story short, usually no. HOWEVER, others above are dead wrong (especially Richard, he's completely wrong).
Your IP (even a dynamic IP) can literally pinpoint your location is a specific set of circumstances. You have a smartphone, right? You connect it to your wifi, and you use GPS based apps on it. Those apps all report and/or sell your current location and current IP address for marketing purposes, and there are companies out there that buy and sell that data and report it online.
I've only found one that was able to successfully pinpoint my location. The rest were within a block or 2.
It's called geolocation. Ignore the clueless twits below, they have no idea what they are talking about.
An IP address will only let someone identify your ISP and your ISP's location. Without a court order, the ISP will not release details of who has been assigned any specific address.
I don't use Instagram myself, but unless it provides a peer-to-peer connection similar to Skype or torrents, then nobody should be able to get hold of your address.
As most home users have dynamic (changeable) IP addresses, your address could be different tomorrow.
I hope this helps.
Nonsense……your IP address contains no info about you….example…..my IP address shows I live somewhere in the state of New Jersey and that I have Comcast for my internet and that is it…….
Relax….they are talking nonsense……
unplug the modem or modem/router from the wall wait ten minutes and plug it back in , you should then have a new allocated IP address, check the modem or router is set to NOT respond to unsolicited pings from the internet
