I want less ping in my video games and higher upload speeds which is best?

Ethernet is more reliable and generally faster. The ethernet cable you use makes a difference in speed (make sure it's new). We have a newish cable router with wifi, and my cord was 14.something megabytes, not megabits, per second, whereas the wifi from the same router was something like 3 per second to friend's laptop, and the roommate's ethernet cord got like 8 per second. Unless you spend money on getting the fastest or close to the fastest wifi, ethernet is going to be faster. Your computer's wifi adapter has to be fast, and your router has to be fast. I imagine it's more spendy to get a fast wifi adapter, but with reliability alone I would rather have ethernet even if it was 20% slower. Have had issues with multiple networks using wifi, but ethernet avoided about 60% of the problems.
Caoedhen:
You have to look at the Ethernet adapter in your box… if it is 100mbps, then you can't go any faster than that. If it is Gigabit, then cabled Ethernet will be faster than the WiFi connection.

Having said that… ping times aren't going to be improved in any measurable amount. You can have the fastest networking equipment available, but if the site you are connecting to can't keep up with your network, it will seem slow. Online gaming depends more on the servers at the other end than on your gear, and an overloaded server is going to be laggy no matter how fast your connection is. Not much you can do to fix it.

David E:
Cable faster in my experience. Sure, the 5 GHz can go faster but mine never connects over 800 Mbps or so. Ethernet is 1000 Mbps and can use 80% of that or more. Often the computers are the thing holding data transfer back.

Gigabit Ethernet is still faster than wifi, and doesn't drop off with distance, interference or other devices sharing the same bandwidth.

if I get a RJ45 Cat5e Ethernet Patch Cable will it be faster or slower than 5ghz wifi?
Kevy:
WiFi is Half Duplex

Ethernet is Full Duplex

Even if your 5Ghz was 450Mbps and your Wired was 100Mbps wired would collect more Bits per second because its a more solid connection… less interference, less collision and less corrupted packets.

May:
Direct cable is always faster and error free.
