So I watched a TV show episode yesterday on youtube only to now realize that the content was copyrighted and was pirated content.

Am I going to get in trouble for this?

Thanks!

PS.
I live in the US, if that matters,

Terentia: Yes, it is illegal and you could *theoretically* get into trouble.

"Copyright infringement in the United States strict liability offense. What this means, is that users are liable when they illegally copy works, even if they're not aware that this is wrong, or that the work is protected by copyright. …. According to a strict reading of the copyright laws, and discussions with legal scholars, users could unknowingly be liable if they click on the wrong YouTube link. The fact that they're not aware that a video was illegally uploaded is irrelevant. All that matters is that they clicked on a link, and watched the video."

Practically speaking though, it's *extremely* unlikely that you'll ever get into legal trouble for merely watching the wrong YouTube video. Many millions of people (knowingly or unknowingly) have watched at least one illegally uploaded YouTube video – and the courts are not clogged with YouTube-related copyright lawsuits filed against half the American population! Copyright holders typically go after illegal uploaders, not viewers. It is remotely possible though that an aggressive copyright holder could successfully sue Google in court to get the IP addresses of anyone who watched illegally uploaded content that it owns. This happened back in 2008, but Viacom never seems to have taken any legal action against the viewers of its videos, and I'm not aware of similar lawsuits having been filed since then.

Who's going to know? Who's going to stop you? If it wasn't for pirated videos, YouTube would be out if business !
Duncan:
No. It is illegal for YouTube to make it available, and they will take it down if they know about it, and for the original user to upload it.

YouTube may have a licensing arrangement with the copyright holders where they receive some of the advertising money and allow it to stay on YouTube.

SteveN:
If it's on YouTube, the person who posted it could get in trouble. Not the persons who watched it. The person who owns the copyrights to the video will usually ask YouTube to remove it, and if you click on the link, it will show a message about that once it is spotted.
Bill:
No it is not illegal to watch Youtube videos. I may be illegal to download them, but not watch them.
It is up to Youtube managers to monitor what is placed on you tube not you.
Susankhya:
it is not pirated to watch viedo on youtube
alvin:
It is not illegal your not the one who uploaded the video
Yami:
No, the uploader will get a warning and the video may be removed.
