I have an ubuntu desktop that I back stuff up on, however, I sent a friend their laptop through the mail, and completely forgot to put their files back on it. Is there any way I can set up a cloud server and connect the cloud drive to there laptop through remote and download their files from my Ubuntu desktop? What apps can I use without spending more money than I have to? I am strapped for cash, so I'm looking into free ways first. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Ronnie: Just use dropbox, or setup an FTP server on it.

Ronnie:
Use dropbox. there is an alternative I'm not even sure I should tell you because we're in public: OpenSSH. If both your machines are Ubuntu and have it installed, or his is Windows and has the program PuTTY installed, AND he has an account on your machine AND you can tell him what your internet address is, either by phone or text or email in real time, then put the files or copies where they are accessible to his account, give him your internet address and he should be able to use ssh or sftp too get his grubby little hands on them.

A cloud is scalable… so no. Just use dropbox.
