so as to open device manager and right click on my graphics card and click update drivers. PC then searches online and does the update.

You don't upgrade your graphics driver from Windows. Windows can do a fine job and does for the most part. But if you specifically need to update the driver you usually want to get it form the manufacture's website.

Of course it's ok. that's actually the normal manual way of updating it. It pulls the driver update from the company website. There are automatic driver/component updaters which does that automatically.
Undisclosed:
The PC will likely find what is made available by Microsoft if you do this, not the version direct from the manufacturer. These often differ. Get it from the maker of the card.
