I've currently got an acer laptop with an i5 3337u processor, 4gb RAM and a 500gb hdd

I've just bought an 120gb ssd and an 8gb ram stick so my specs would be an i5 processor, 12gb ram and a 120gb ssd

My OS of choice is Xubuntu 16.10

Would it be worth the upgrade? I don't game or anything but I've

Would it be worth the upgrade? I don't game or anything but I've wanted to upgrade it for some time, would an 120gb ssd be enough saying that I'll use the 500gb as an external Hdd?

Installing an SSD was one of the biggest most tangible performance upgrades in 30 years for me! I've upgraded everything from RAM to hard drives to video cards to CPU's in my life at different times. The only thing in the last 30 years that made a substantial performance improvement to me was the SSD. And what was the last thing that made an equal performance boost prior to 30 years ago? That was when I upgraded from an 8088 processor to a 386 processor! 8-bit to 32-bit in one fell swoop, so the SSD was on the same level of boost as something as momentus as that!
Johnathan:
Not really worth the upgrade in your case. You would have been better selling that and buying a better laptop instead of buying upgrades.

The SSD will give you a performance boost but the extra RAM will make no difference. You probably aren't even maxing the RAM you already have.

Jamin:
All of my computers have SSDs in them, personally I dislike using computers that don't have them.

They are great for making old computers useful again. I've seen them in old 2008 macbooks and such computers are plenty useful still for internet.

But you need to know that all an SSD is going to do is speed up load times. Programs will open faster, folders will open instantly, the computer will boot in under 20 seconds.

And just to ask…
Are you sure this laptop even can use 8 GB RAM sticks? 8 GB is probably plenty for a computer this old. Getting more RAM doesn't make your computer faster unless you're maxing out the RAM.

Bob:
In my opinion, and SSD is worth the upgrade.
AZIANNE:
It depends on if you need a faster boot and read and write speeds
