As im downloading a steam game, i noticed im downloading at 500kbs. This is insanely odd as its usually 5 mbs or better. Why is it so slow????

Your ISP could be throttling your downloads.

If you suddenly are downloading several GBs of data, like a game software, streaming a movie, or using P2P to copy MPG or AVI files, many internet companies have automated features to prevent you from stealing all the bandwidth from their other customers.

Let's say you normally get 15 MB/s download speeds. What I've seen happen is that after so many minutes or hours where you were downloading files, "something" happens and suddenly your download speeds drop to 8 MB/s. And then if you continue downloading, the speed drops to 4 MB/s.

Some companies claim that they do not throttle speeds, but it sure seems suspicious this slowing down only happens after significant downloads.

One thing you could try to see if it helps is to turn off the router/modem that the ISP supplied to you. Wait about a minute, then turn it back on. It will come back on, take a few minutes to handshake again and you get your connection to the internet back, and then see what happens with the download speeds.

You can use the SpeedTest website to see what speeds you are getting. If you are paying for 15 MB/s and find you consistently only are getting 2 MB/s, you might want to discuss with the ISP. Why would you pay higher rates for higher download speeds, and then not get those speeds, right?

Josh:
First, check if someone on your network is intensely using your network, its usually the case.

Had the same issue with a same game a while ago, so it could also be the steam servers.

Also make sure you're downloading it from the server closest to your region.

I hope i helped you.
