I had Vista on my pc and that only took up 20gb from the 150gb on the computer. I've loaded windows 7 on now and its at 87GB. Why and how does it use so much, and how can I get most of it back?

It could be Windows Backup. Not only do restore points take up space, but it made a backup file called Windows.Old or similar that has the backup of your Win Vista install in it. It doesn't compress these much.

Windows updates also bloat the drive footprint, and you may also be seeing save files from games bloating your %appdata% directory.

That is too much. A 64bit win7 install is normally around 30GB. You may still have your vista installed also. Check your C drive for a windows.old folder.

you most likely upgraded which moves the old windows install to a folder on the computer (C:\old.computer)
Laurence I:
you probably installed it and kept the vista as well.you may have a windows.old folder with all the vista stuff in it.
