You can use the iPad with WiFi only and not pay for a network connection if you prefer.

The options on the pretend iPad tablet will depend on which one you get.

You can NOT switch from an iPad to a tablet! An iPad IS a tablet already!
You can switch to a different sort of a tablet – but it will be the same as an iPad, just not as good!

Assuming that your WiFi network uses wireless security, you will then need to enter your wireless key or password. Or if your router has WPS that can somewhat automate the initial connection, but also could potentially allow someone else unknown nearby to connect to your WiFi.

Once you establish the WiFi connection, it should be able to automatically reconnect later.
