I just went through that, basically a 64-bit Win7 laptop purchased years ago and never on the Internet other than when I updated it years ago (before SP1). When I connected it to my Internet it did some updates, but then reached a point that it could not do SP1 with MS Security Essentials running which at this point could not be updated or removed.

So I did complete recovery from to Win7 like when the laptop was new, then proceeded to do updates. It still reached a point where svchost was running away using excessive CPU and I had to search for something to fix that. And after other updates it reached a point where updates would search forever and ever and never finish searching. So I when back to this Microsoft Community post which resolved that on a friend's laptop and that solve the endless update searching on the laptop I was reinstalling. It does not matter than it says Canadian Tech, I am in the US and it works:

I imaged the drive in its current state, so I never have to go through that again if Win7 messes up or their drive fails. But since they do not have Internet service, they may never do enough of anything on it to wear it out. But I put LibreOffice and gimp in Windows, so if all else fails I could install Linux and they could use those same programs.

there are no "new" updates for windows 7 being released by microsoft 'cause they no longer support windows 7… there were lots of windows updates after sp 1 was released, so i'm wondering if a local computer repair shop may have the microsoft updates in case they need to recover windows 7 for a client…
