Computer is idle

Some apps and games stop what they are doing if they hide behind another app or when you minimize them. When you open the task manager the CPU is not so busy because the other apps/games stopped, so it doesn't get as hot as before.

Make sure you are reading the same sensor. The CPUs have several sensors with different temperatures.

Jamin:
You saying it's 55C when running a program?

Switching to task manager would probably pause the program and lighten the load on the CPU, causing it to cool down a bit.

The only and perfect way to measure CPU temp in hardware monitor….. under bios set up.
nilan:
temperature is not stable vary by tasks. when you pop up task manager the temp will down ,because task is not move to background, some tasks stooping or suspend to Page file. when pop up again. move data to RAM<

What are you using to check your temps and what are you doing when it goes to 55c?
IamtheBear:
When you switch into task manager you will be pausing another program.
TopSeven:
The temperature varies all the time. Make sure to check within seconds
