I tried cloning my OS on an external HDD so I could upgrade my laptop to a larger and faster SSD. Now the 780gb of my 1tb external drive that wasn't used in the cloning is inaccessible. In the drive manager it won't give me the usual options of making it into a new volume or allowing me to extend the cloned

You are more likely succeed by backup and restore method in upgrading laptop. Cloning has higher rate of failure. Backup your OS to external hard drive, create a bootable USB, swap the HDD with SSD, boot the laptop off bootable USB, connect the external hard drive and then restore the image to SSD. All the operations could be done with AOMEI Backupper. Cheers.

WITF would you do that? You are supposed to clone the existing drive to the drive you plan to install, not some other drive you felt like using.

I have to ask……you have a C drive with all your programs / your OS / all your stuff….correct??…is this what you are cloning??…..or are you attempting to copy your recovery OS off of the recovery partition ???…
