Last night I was alerted to a virus on my computer, but it said it had been dealt with/ removed. I downloaded a new program. Today my computer has been slow all day. Is the virus still on there?

It's hard to tell with so little information, just because your PC is slow it doesn't mean that it has a virus.
Open up task manager and check what process is draining all your CPU power and potentially your RAM.
If you recognize the application that slows down your PC then all is fine, if you don't, do some research first before you rush to delete it, Google is your friend.
Dave:
Did you install a SECOND anti virus along with the first? If so, that's more than likely causing the slowdown. You can't have more than 1 anti virus on a device. They end up scanning each other and getting stuck in a never ending loop.
Fred:
After you have run an AV scan, I would run the free versions of Malwarebytes and CCleaner.

Malware is far more common today and most AV do nothing to identify and remove malware.

While CCleaner is neither AV or anti-malware, it is a general cleanup tool that may help you regain free space.

Wes:
Malwarebytes is a great program to remove viruses and malware, give it a go…

Probably, yes.
