your lcd (the external one) has just ONE native size eg 1920×1080@60hz. if you do not set that exact setting, then most just go black. you should be able to find a monitor driver for the monitor that should cure it, but ONLY if your gpu driver allows that external monitor setting so if you are relying on a basic windows driver for your actual gpu it may be a bit too naff for that. make sure your monitor driver is NOT just PnP vga or something like that.*** note some monitors, if you hit the monitor's menu button, tell you what mode you are trying to set, or the mode that they actually need.

Does Vista on that particular PC do auto-switching of screen resolution? If not, you will need to set the settings of the external monitor to one the monitor can handle. Start with something like 640×480.

With no model number of anything, or what type of cable you are using between some "vista laptop" and "dell monitor" or what video setting you might be trying in some video system, no guessing to help is possible.

im not really a tech genius so i dont know what a model number is or that their are different types of cables… sorry.. i just know worked previously with my windows 10.
