I believe the only way to set the digit grouping pattern that you wish is to change your Regional settings.

You don't state which operating system you are using so, the following procedure is for Windows 7.

Access the Control Panel (Start > Control Panel).

Select the 'Clock, Language, and Region' option.

Select 'Change the date, time, or number format'.

When the Region and Language window opens, click the 'Format' drop down at the top.

As your question is in English, I would infer you are working with Excel in English. Therefore, in the dropdown, select:

English (India)

Click 'Apply'.

This will format number as you indicate in your question.

Displaying a number like 1,00,000 is incorrect and does not make sense. That is why excel does not display it as 1,00,000. The idea of comma's in numbers is to break it up to make it easier to read, for example 100,000 is One Hundred Thousand.

Right click on cell. Click format cells, select "number" and there should be box there to tick, that will place commas in your numbers
